A senior member of the Senate Republican Party addressed the Trump administration's handling of a controversial military operation during an interview with CNN on Tuesday.
Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) participated in a segment on "The Arena" with host Kasie Hunt, focusing on a strike that targeted an Iranian educational institution, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 175 non-combatants. A recent report from the New York Times suggested that U.S. military forces may have been present in the vicinity at the time of the attack, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have presented divergent accounts regarding the strike, with Trump denying its occurrence while Hegseth announced an internal review by the Department of Defense.
Kennedy expressed a more critical perspective on the event, characterizing it as a "significant error."
"I won't evade responsibility for this," Kennedy told Hunt in response to Hegseth's assertion that the Defense Department is conducting an investigation.
"This was a grave and unacceptable mistake," he stated. "The investigation might challenge my assessment. I hope so. The loss of life remains tragic, but I believe this was a terrible mistake. I regret its occurrence. I can confirm it was not intentional."
Kennedy emphasized that he could not identify any other plausible explanation for the strike.
"When an error occurs, it should be acknowledged," Kennedy remarked.
