A high-profile Trump administration appointee with a documented history of promoting extremist rhetoric has decided to step back from the nomination process.
Jeremy Carl, who was selected to serve as assistant secretary of state for international organizations, has been linked to controversial social media posts that included provocative remarks about the January 6 insurrection and the American Federation of Teachers. These statements have raised significant concerns among lawmakers and civil rights advocates.
The central controversy revolved around Carl's alignment with white nationalist ideologies, particularly his assertion that "white identity" is being threatened within the United States. During a Senate hearing, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) pressed Carl on the definition of "white identity," which Carl struggled to articulate clearly.
Facing mounting pressure and a lack of support from key Senate Republicans, Carl made the decision to withdraw from the nomination process. This move followed a public statement on X, where he expressed gratitude for the presidential endorsement and the support of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s team.
"I am deeply appreciative of President Trump for both nominating and re-nominating me for this critical position, as well as Secretary Pompeo and his team for their ongoing support throughout this challenging and lengthy process," Carl wrote. "However, for roles of this magnitude, the backing of the President and Secretary of State is essential but not enough. We also required unanimous support from every Republican senator on the Foreign Relations Committee, given the Democratic opposition to my candidacy, and unfortunately, that consensus was not achieved at this time."
In his message, Carl noted that several Republican senators privately indicated they were dissatisfied with their inability to advance his nomination, pointing to a small group of "problematic" senators who would face scrutiny in upcoming primary elections.
"I remain fully confident in President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the dedicated leadership team at the Department of State, which includes many close colleagues," Carl stated. "I believe they will continue to pursue a foreign policy that prioritizes American interests and ensures the nation maintains its global influence and power."
